A few thoughts and observations from a recent Texas trip:
1. I heard the David Lee Roth program this morning on his
Dallas affiliate. As you know David Lee replaced Howard
Stern when Howard went to Sirius. I thought HE was pretty
good….glib with the ad lib, good flexible voice range, and
sounded professional enough to be a professional in the
radio business. However, I would have programmed the
“program” differently…using my favorite expression
“distinctively different” as my guide/target; however, that
is none of my business is it?? Let’s observe the ratings
over the next year. And good luck to them.
2. Last Saturday I was at a meeting with a group of heavy
Texas broadcasters…some ex and some current. After the
business part of it, they started sharing stories about
funny things that happened to them as they were climbing the
radio success ladder. I had already heard some of stories,
but they were better the second time!!! Lots of laughter. As
I left, I said to myself, “Self, that was pretty funny stuff
in there…mostly radio things that have never been heard
before. I know because I WAS THERE. The next meeting of its
kind, I should record it…so that others in radio might
listen and have a few new radio laughs as well.” And I will
do it!!!! OK guys and gal????
3. While listening to the FM country station in Bay City,
Texas, I heard a very good voice in early morning drive.
Could have been voice tracked. I didn’t catch her name…but
she is a communicator for sure. I think she has a good radio
future.
4. The oldies station in Houston sounds good.
5. KKDA-FM in Dallas sounds like it is number one…and it
is!!!!
6. Texas is going to be busy with conventions, meetings and
inductions this fall. The combined NAB RADIO SHOW/Radio and
Records Meeting will be a major event. And the Texas Radio
Hall of Fame Induction will be too. These Texas people know
how to throw a party for sure!!!!!
7. American Airlines departure area had a NEW sign that that
stated that there is now a two dollar bag charge…per bag…and
then the tip goes on top of that. Have I missed something???
So, Pat and I had four bags to check which is eight dollars,
plus a handlers tip of 4 bucks (1 dollar per bag). Have
other large carriers recently moved to this new luggage
fee?? If so, let me know. Also, I would like to know who
receives luggage fee…is it American Airlines, the luggage
handlers or who??? Just interested. I have about 4 million
miles in the air over 25 years (a guess), and I certainly do
not remember a luggage fee.
8. While I was in Dallas my broadcasting friend Don Keyes
died from lung problems. He was one great guy, who worked
long and hard for the McLendon broadcasting group. I had
lunch with him a few months ago, and saw him two months
prior to that at the Texas Radio Hall of Fame dinner and
initiation. He looked great. It was quite a shock to learn
of his unexpected death. This guy was special, a really true
friend.
