"I Was There"
Sixty-Ninth of a series ...

Various broadcasting items:

1. As I wrote in column 27 my brother-in-law Edward Bates Tomlinson, known to all as Bubba, asked me to find a radio station for his group about two hours from Dallas. So, I called my friend Broker Bill Whitley who lives in the DFW area. He had something good!!! As mentioned in column 27 one of the stations has historical significance. I was referring to the following. The two stations to be purchased are KNET AM and KYKK FM in Palestine, Texas. Bubba filed an application with the FCC for transfer to his group, Tomlinson/Leis, last week. Indeed, KNET AM was the first station owned by radio pioneer/legend Gordon McLendon. It is where Gordon learned all about radio…and got his creative juices flowing. For those of you who do not know the history of Mr. McLendon, he once ran for Governor of and Senator from Texas. He lost both elections, but not without a fight. But he RARELY lost when it came to radio. Check my column number 29 for a McLendon report. I did a great deal of due diligence for Bubba on this project, and the great news is that he will inherit a fabulous staff headed by General Manager Lee Parkinson. I know because I WAS THERE along with Bubba and his partner Dorvin Leis to meet the staff. I have a suspicion this will not be the last station that Tomlinson/Leis buys!!!

2. If you like the thoughts of marketer Jack Trout you will REALLY enjoy a recent Radio Ink article written by Editor-in-Chief Reed Bunzel. The questions and answers are brilliant. If you are a serious broadcaster you should read this article!!!!! You may have to contact the Radio Ink office for a copy….I could not find it on their site. It is the June 20th edition. I always learn something from Mr. Trout.

3. I attended the Radio and Records convention in Cleveland last week. It was fun and educational. How about the fact this was a “letters” convention. Such as ROI, DJ, AM, FM, XM, DB, ARB, JPB, GM, GSM, CP, NAB, FCC, SEC, NASDAQ, NYSE, RCS, LOI, APA, BMI, ASCAP, WTAM (and other call letters), SECAC, and of course R and R (for Radio and Records and Rock and Roll…as in the Hall of Fame located in Cleveland). It was my pleasure to introduce a good friend of mine, Kenneth Dotson, of TicketsNow.com to many group heads and prominent consultant/advisors. You’ll know more about Kenneth’s idea marrying TicketsNow.com and radio in the immediate future. Erica Farber and her R and R staff should be congratulated by all for a well organized and attended meeting. A good time was had by all!!!

4. And, both Pat and I wish you a great 4th of July. We are indeed fortunate to live in this great country!!!
