1. The new streaming fees will definitely cause the
cessation of streaming of some radio stations. Digestion of
these new fees is rough for small market station operators,
and station owners/operators that are losing money or
breaking even. The next six months will determine which
stations will continue streaming. Don’t be surprised if some
big boys pull the plug.
2. Paul Robinson of Emerald City Radio Partners sent me the
website of a great article “The Wrecking Crew” from a recent
edition of American Heritage Magazine. For those of you who
are interested in the making of music…or the history of
record production… should read it. What was “the Wrecking
Crew”? They were a group of great Los Angeles based artists
who played background, and arranged, and directed hundreds
of the hits of the 60’s and 70’s. You will be surprised who
some of them are. This is a very well written historical
piece. If you would like the American Heritage Magazine site
let me know and I will e-mail it to you.
3. I WAS THERE in the Coco-Walk theatre in Coconut Grove,
Florida, last weekend to see my favorite comedian…and
actor….Hugh Grant. He did not disappoint me performing in
Music and Lyrics. Drew Barrymore and Haley Bennett are very
good as well. The last box office numbers I observed
indicated about forty million in revenue for this movie
since release. The initial revues were 11 positive, 5
neutral, and 2 negative according to various sites. Hugh
Grant has a face that takes over the screen…and a wonderful,
understandable UK feel to his voice. I haven’t missed a
movie he has starred in. He is a very funny man and
excellent actor.
4. As you have assumed programming and promotion will have a
new playing field when electronic audience measurements
begin. A lot of the diary TSL tricks that we have used for
thirty years will not work. What WILL WORK is programming by
the minute (“minute programming”). Every minute will be
important to create programming for listeners that they just
can’t turn off. This will be very important every minute of
the day…even in morning drive. I have had quite a few
telephone strategy discussions with other broadcasters
pointing out how to accomplish this. The veteran programmers
automatically understand the “minute” approach they have
used in their past. The new programmers will invent some new
“minute” approaches….and a few of them will emerge with some
good ideas. We will all keep an eye on the vets and the new
guys/gals!!!!
