What do the
following TV shows have in common? Lost, Grey’s
Anatomy, Desperate Housewives, CSI, Extreme Makeover,
Survivor, Heroes, Next Top Model, Sunday Night Football,
One Tree Hill, Prison Break, and Ugly Betty. What do
they have in common??? Well if you are a PD that
programs to 12-17 year olds you BETTER KNOW that these
are the most watched TV programs by teens as measured by
Nielson Media Research (week of Oct 2-8). Your jocks
should interview (by phone) some of the stars from the
aforementioned TV shows. You as PD should set up some
promotions/contests around them as well. Etc, etc, etc.
Hey, this is what teens are viewing by the millions.
There is something within these programs to help your
station/personalities to be teen-positive.

Months ago I
wrote an article about a singer/songwriter by the name
of Sarah Buxton. I thought then and do now that she has
a very bright career ahead of her.. She signed with
Lyric Street records (owned by Disney), recorded a CD to
be released soon, and with the Lyric Street promotion
crew visited dozens of key programmers of country music
stations. Last week I noticed in USA today a list of
the most popular songs being played by radio stations.
And you guessed it Sarah is right there in the country
charts….number 28 and going up. The song is
“Innocence”, and is just one of the great cuts on the
CD. And to think I first heard her in my
brother-in-laws Dallas home during a jam session a year
or more ago…yep, I WAS THERE. I figured she would be a
recording star and it looks like she is well on her
way. And, incidentally, since she is indirectly
associated with Disney we might see her in a movie down
the line…who knows?? Hope you enjoy her music as much
as I do. (I apologize to the research company that
determined she was number 28…I forgot to observe the
companies name; however, if you are reading this, Mr.
Researcher, let me know and I will give you credit it in
an upcoming column).

The last
time I talked to Mike Phillips is shortly after he
resigned from the PD’s job at oldies programmed KRTH in
LA…I don’t remember the year, but let me guess a decade
or more ago. He was PD there for over ten years I
believe. I called him to try to talk him out of
retirement…which is what he wanted to do. I gave him my
best “if you rest…you rust” sales pitch. But, he told
me that he had worked long enough. I got word Thursday
that Mike has died of pancreatic cancer at his adopted
home town of Portland, Oregon. Mike was a great person
and superb broadcaster. He touched a lot of people…and
was liked by all of them!!! Our thoughts go to Mike’s
family.
