Ken (Hubcap)
Carter's "Saturday
Night Oldies Show" is still heard on KAAM in Dallas,
WPTR in Albany, New York and WLGZ in Rochester, New
York. He was inducted into the Texas
Radio Hall of Fame in 2002. He was
a special contributing writer for
RadioDailyNews.com
A veteran newsman, sportscaster and DJ, Ken (Hubcap) Carter started
his long
and colorful radio career at KRBA in Lufkin almost 40 years
ago. This small east Texas
radio station also was the "first" station for radio
people like Murphy Martin,
Bill Young, and Robert B. McEntire.
After high school graduation Carter moved to KEEE in
Nacogdoches and
became news director of the station at age 20. Shortly after that
he
became news director at WWUN in Jackson, Mississippi.
It was there that
he soon began to establish a reputation in radio news with network
coverage of some of the biggest events in the civil rights
struggle of
the mid 60's.
Coming back to Texas in 1966 he worked with legendary Texas
newsman Joe
Holstead at KLVI in Beaumont..then moved on to KFJZ
and the Texas State
Network in Fort Worth. In 1969 he was reunited with Holstead
at KXOL in
Fort Worth. He then spent two years at KBST in Big
Spring before
rejoining Holstead again as a part of the news team at KLIF
in Dallas.
In 1973 he became news director at KXOL in Fort Worth and
then joined
Holstead again at KFJZ and TSN. He became news
director at TSN in 1975.
Carter taught Broadcast Journalism at Texas Christian
University and at
Texas Wesleyan University. He was also assistant
basketball coach at
Wesleyan. He did play by play sports for many years with
the Shamrock
Oil Company's broadcast of the Texas high school football playoffs
and
was the football voice of the University of Texas at Arlington
for ten
years.
In 1993 he became a teacher/coach at North Dallas High School and
taught
for seven years.
Until his death at
age 60 on February 27, 2004, he enjoyed living the kind of normal
life that any living legend would.
